Written by Bud Cockrell. Produced by Paul Baratta, engineered by Eric Prestidge, mastered by Doug Sax.

“Mississippi Delta” is another Bud Cockrell composition from Side A of the Today album, notable for being one of the few tracks where all three of the other band members — Fred Webb, Pattie Santos, and Val Fuentes — join in on backing vocals together, giving it a fuller group-vocal sound than some of the record’s other tracks. It closes out a run of Cockrell-written songs that reviewers have generally described as the bluesier, rock-leaning half of the album, distinct from the more eclectic material found on Side B.

It’s A Beautiful Day – Mississippi Delta Lyrics

The mississippi delta farmer’s dream,
When living’s just a country lord commodity.
The mississippi delta,
Where watermelons grow
Black soil and country living,
It’s deep in my soul.

Mississippi Delta,
where watermelons grow.
Black soil and country living,
It’s deep in my soul.
The smell of cotton being picked by hand,
John Neal take me to that promised land.
A Mississippi, yeah, gospel land,
I know that they’re on to land, yeah.

Yeah I’m gonna lay down and sleep on a cattle sack,
And rest my mind when I get back, Lord.
If the good Lord’s willing, and the creek don’t rise.
Lord’s willing, oh, and the creek don’t rise.

Mississippi Delta, where I was born.
Lord, I want to go home,
To the smell of cotton being picked by hand.
John Deere, take me to that promised land.
A Mississippi band, yeah, a gospel band.
I love that Delta land.
Oh, yeah. Oh, I love that Delta land.

Gonna sit down by the riverside,
and drink moonshine and live my life.
Gonna stay in the country until I die.
