Written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin. Produced by Roland Orzabal, engineered by Steve “Barney” Chase. Released in September 1991 (Fontana Records) as a single and on the tribute album Two Rooms: Celebrating the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin (6:02).

A cover of the Elton John song from his 1974 album Caribou, Oleta Adams‘s version was her contribution to the Two Rooms tribute record and earned her a Grammy nomination in the R&B field. Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears, who produced Adams’ earlier records after she became a labelmate on Fontana, produced the track and played guitar on it. The recording is an alternative to the better-known 1991 live duet by George Michael and Elton John, which went to No. 1 in both the UK and US. For years Adams’ version existed only on the tribute album and as a single, and it wasn’t included on one of her own studio albums until Moving On.

Oleta Adams – Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me Lyrics

I can’t light no more of your darkness
All my pictures seem to fade to black and white
I’m growing tired, time stands still before me
Frozen here on the ladder of my life

Too late to save myself from falling
I took a chance and changed your way of life
But you misread my meaning when I met you
Closed the door and left me blinded by the light

Don’t let the sun go down on me
(Don’t let the sun)
Although I search myself, it’s always someone else I see
I’d just allow a fragment of your life to wander free
(Don’t let the sun)
But losing everything is like the sun going down on me

I can’t find, oh, the right romantic line
But see me once, see the way I feel
Don’t discard me just because you think I mean you harm
But these cuts I have, oh, they need love, help them heal

Don’t let the sun go down on me
(Don’t let the sun)
Although I search myself, it’s always someone else I see
I’d just allow a fragment of your life to wander free
(Don’t let the sun)
But losing everything is like the sun going down on me

Don’t let the sun go down on me
Although I searched myself, it’s always someone else I see
I’d just allow a fragment of your life to wander free
Losing everything is like the sun going down on me

Losing everything is like the sun going down on me
