Written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin. Produced by David Tickle. From Two Rooms (1991).

A cover of the ballad from Elton John’s 1976 album Blue Moves, Joe Cocker‘s version is a stripped-back reading of a mournful song about a relationship falling apart. Elton John wrote the melody and most of the lyrics himself, with Bernie Taupin finishing it afterward, which is unusual for the pair, who normally worked the other way around. The Cocker recording reunites him with longtime collaborator Chris Stainton, his keyboardist since the 1960s, and it was later included on his compilations The Best of Joe Cocker, The Ultimate Collection, and Gold.

Joe Cocker – Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word Lyrics

What have I got to do to make you love me
What have I got to do to make you care
What do I do when lightning strikes me
And I wake to find that you’re not there

What do I do to make you want me
What have I got to do to be heard
What do I say when it’s all over
And sorry seems to be the hardest word

It’s sad, so sad
It’s a sad, sad situation

And it’s getting more and more absurd
It’s sad, so sad
Why can’t we talk it over
Oh it seems to me
That sorry seems to be the hardest word

What do I do to make you love me
What have I got to do to be heard
What do I do when lightning strikes me
What have I got to do
What have I got to do
When sorry seems to be the hardest word
