Written by Bud Cockrell. Released on Side A of It’s a Beautiful Day…Today (Columbia Records, 1973).
“Creator” is one of several Side A tracks written by Bud Cockrell, the band’s bassist and co-lead vocalist alongside Pattie Santos on this album. By this point, the band had reconfigured into a sextet, with only Santos, drummer Val Fuentes, keyboardist Fred Webb, and guitarist Bill Gregory remaining from earlier lineups, while violinist Greg Bloch had taken over for David LaFlamme following his departure. Reviewers have generally drawn a contrast between Cockrell’s grittier, rock-oriented songwriting on Side A and the more varied, chamber-pop material found elsewhere on the record.
It’s A Beautiful Day – Creator Lyrics
I blurted my knees in the same dirty shoe.
And the black folks next door,
they were the best friends I knew.
And when you put your finger.
And you said I’m no good.
Consider your reasons.
I want this understood.
You’re my creator.
You’re my creator.
You’re my creator.
I’m not wasting my sweat,
To show you off,
That I step on your children
To make myself tall
I’m real as is,
I’m a rust away in peace,
And my life is my own,
Until it succeeds.
Every day of my life
Lord, I want to tell you
That you’re my God
My creator
