Written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin. Produced by Kate Bush, engineered by Del Palmer. From Two Rooms (1991).
A cover of the song from Elton John’s 1972 album Honky Château, Kate Bush‘s reggae-inflected version reached No. 12 on the UK singles chart and No. 2 in Australia. In her liner notes, she wrote that Elton had been her biggest hero since she was 11, and that she chose “Rocket Man” when she was asked to take part in 1989. The single was backed with her cover of “Candle in the Wind,” and the track was later included on her 2018 collection The Other Sides.
Kate Bush – Rocket Man Lyrics
She packed my bags last night pre-flight
Zero hour nine AM
And I’m gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the earth so much, I miss my wife
It’s lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight
And I think it’s gonna be a long long time
‘Til touchdown brings me ’round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I’m a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it’s gonna be a long long time
‘Til touchdown brings me ’round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I’m a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it’s cold as hell
And there’s no one there to raise them if you did
And all this science I don’t understand
It’s just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man
And I think it’s gonna be a long long time
‘Til touchdown brings me ’round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I’m a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it’s gonna be a long long time
‘Til touchdown brings me ’round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I’m a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it’s gonna be a long long time
And I think it’s gonna be a long long time
I think it’s gonna be a long long time
It’s gonna be a long long time
Long long time
Gonna be a long long time
It’s gonna be a long long time
Gonna be a long long time
Oh, I think it’s gonna be a long long time
