Written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin. Produced by Gus Dudgeon. From Blue Moves (Rocket Records, 1976), also released as a single on 1 November 1976.

Unusually for the pair, Elton John wrote the melody and most of the lyrics himself, with Bernie Taupin finishing the words afterward. It was recorded at Eastern Sound in Toronto in March 1976 and became the first single from Blue Moves, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 11 in the UK, and topping the US Adult Contemporary chart. One of Elton’s most performed songs, it was later covered by Joe Cocker for the 1991 Two Rooms tribute and by Blue with Elton John in 2002.

Elton John, Bernie Taupin – Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word Lyrics

What have I gotta do to make you love me?
What have I gotta do to make you care?
What do I do when lightning strikes me?
And I wake to find that you’re not there

What do I do to make you want me?
What have I gotta do to be heard?
What do I say when it’s all over?
And sorry seems to be the hardest word

It’s sad, (so sad) so sad
It’s a sad, sad situation
And it’s getting more and more absurd
It’s sad, (so sad) so sad
Why can’t we talk it over?
Oh, it seems to me
That sorry seems to be the hardest word

It’s sad, (so sad) so sad
It’s a sad, sad situation
And it’s getting more and more absurd
It’s sad, (so sad) so sad
Why can’t we talk it over?
Oh, it seems to me
That sorry seems to be the hardest word

What do I do to make you love me?
Oh, what have I gotta do to be heard?
What do I do when lightning strikes me?
What have I gotta do?
What have I gotta do?
Ooh, and sorry seems to be the hardest word
