Artists

David Coverdale – lead vocals
Glenn Hughes – lead vocals, bass guitar
Ritchie Blackmore – guitar
Jon Lord – organ, keyboards, electric piano
Ian Paice – drums, percussion, mixing

Written by Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord & Ian Paice. Produced by Deep Purple & Martin Birch, recorded at Musicland Studios, Munich, in August 1974 and mixed at the Record Plant. The second track (4:23) on Stormbringer (Purple Records/Warner Bros., 8 November 1974), also released as the B-side of the “Stormbringer” single.

A showcase for the funkier direction of Deep Purple’s Mark III lineup, with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes trading and sharing lead vocals over a heavy groove. One reviewer calls it a wicked groove that perfectly captures the Coverdale/Hughes funk vibe. That funk-leaning approach was exactly what Ritchie Blackmore disliked about the album, and he left the band after Stormbringer and its tour to form Rainbow.

Deep Purple – Love Don’t Mean a Thing Lyrics

Mm
Oh baby
I got to get down

If I work hard every day
For my money
If I work my fingers down to the bone
That ain’t funny, oh yeah

Now if I see
Something I can’t buy
I put a dollar down
Then I try try try
To get my money
I need my money, oh yeah

A woman who ain’t got a dime
I can’t use her no
If she ain’t got no cash money
I’ve got to refuse her, I’ve got to refuse her

I need a woman
With a whole lot of will
So she help me, baby
Help me pay my bill
I need my money, ooh yeah
I got to have money, yeah

I need loving to give me a living
So don’t ask me, I don’t need forgiving
I will stand up to count the cost
But I know I won’t stand the loss, yes!

Well I need a woman
With a whole lot of will
She can help me pay my bill
I need my money, yes
I want my money

Before I say my prayers
I count my money
When I wake up
It had to be there
My money

You see, love, it don’t mean a thing
When she loves you
She can’t bring, can’t bring you no money
I’ve got to have my money

Looking for loving
I need a living
