Written by Ken Hensley. Produced by Gerry Bron, recorded September–October 1972 at Lansdowne Studios, London. Released as the opening track on The Magician’s Birthday (Bronze Records, November 1972); also issued as the B-side to the “Spider Woman” single.
“Sunrise” opens The Magician’s Birthday, an album Ken Hensley based loosely on a short story he’d written that summer. The song has become one of the band’s best-loved classics, particularly its live incarnation — the version recorded for 1973’s Uriah Heep Live, which opens that album, is frequently cited by fans and critics as an improvement on the studio original. This is considered part of the classic-era Heep lineup’s creative peak, with Gary Thain‘s bass work on the album drawing particular praise from reviewers.
Uriah Heep – Sunrise Lyrics
Aaah, aaah
Aaah, aaah oooh
Sunrise, and the new day’s breakin’ through
The morning of another day without you
And as the hours roll by
No-one’s there to see me cry
Except the sunrise…
The sunrise and you.
Aaah, aaah
Aaah, aaah oooh
Tired eyes drift across the shore
Looking for love and nothing more
But as the sea rolls by
No-one’s there to see me cry
Except the sunrise…
The sunrise and you.
Sunrise, – bless my eyes,
Catch my soul – make me whole
– Again.
Sunrise, new day, hear my song
I am tired of fightin’ and foolin’ around
But from now till who knows when
My sword will be my pen
And I’ll love you, love ya
For all of my time.
Sunrise, – bless my eyes
Catch my soul and make me whole
– Again.
So sunrise, – bless my eyes
Catch my soul – make me whole
– Again.
Sunrise, – bless my eyes
Catch my soul – make me whole
– Again.
Sunrise.
