Written by Nellie McKay. Produced by Janis Siegel, arranged by Edsel Gomez, engineered/mixed by Fran Cathcart, recorded at East Side Sound, New York. Released on A Thousand Beautiful Things (Telarc Records, 2006).
A Thousand Beautiful Things marked a distinctive turn for Janis Siegel — a collection of contemporary pop songs (including tracks by Björk and Sting) reimagined in Latin jazz arrangements. Reviewers singled out her cover of “The Suitcase Song,” originally by singer-songwriter Nellie McKay, as one of the record’s more exciting and successful reinterpretations, contrasted with a less-praised opening cover of Björk’s “Hidden Place.”
Janis Siegel – The Suitcase Song Lyrics
Just groovin’
Groovin’ woh oh oh
Yeah e yeah e yeah groovin’
Woh oh oh
Groovin’
On a Sunday afternoon
Really
Couldn’t get away to soon
I can’t imagine anything that’s better
The world is ours whenever we’re together
There ain’t a place I’d like to be instead
Yeah, just groovin’
Just groovin’
Groovin’ woh oh oh
Groovin’
Down a crowded avenue
Doing
Anything we like to do (anything, anything)
There’s always lots of things that we can see
We can be anyone we’d like to be
And all those happy people we could meet
Yeah
Groovin’
On a Sunday afternoon
Really
Couldn’t get away too soon
No no no no
Ah…
We’ll keep on spending sunny days this way
We’re gonna talk and laugh the time away
I feel it coming closer day by day
Life would be ecstasy you and me endlessly
Groovin’
On a Sunday afternoon
Really
Couldn’t get away to soon
Groovin’
On a Sunday afternoon
Really (really now)
Couldn’t get away
Yeah
Couldn’t get away now
No, no, no groovin’
Just groovin’ oh, oh yeah
Just groovin’
(Really)
Just groovin’ yeah, yeah, yeah
(Couldn’t get away too soon, no, no, no)
Just groovin’
