Musicians featured in this piece are:

J.J. Cale – vocals, guitar, keyboards
Eric Clapton – vocals, guitar
Derek Trucks – slide guitar

Written by J.J. Cale. Produced by J.J. Cale, Eric Clapton & Simon Climie, recorded in 2005. Released as the thirteenth track (about 4:07) on The Road to Escondido (Duck/Reprise Records, 7 November 2006). The album won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2008, and a live version by Clapton and Cale was released in 2016.

The album grew out of Eric Clapton‘s idea of asking J.J. Cale to produce a record for him, and became a true two-way collaboration, with both men playing and singing. The title refers to Valley Center Road, which connects Cale‘s home town of Valley Center with Escondido, where Clapton once owned a mansion. Critic Doug Collette singled out Derek Trucks‘s slide guitar on this track, while another reviewer called the song “grand in its simplicity.” The album also holds some of Billy Preston‘s final recordings and is dedicated to him.

J.J. Cale & Eric Clapton – Who Am I Telling You Lyrics

It don’t take no fool to love you
You stand out in any crowd
And I know men who want to own you
I can hear them talking loud
There ain’t no point in just me talking
Who am I telling you?
But you done got yourself together
And you can bet within you
I just realized, I just realized
Who am I telling you?

You never lose, you are a winner
It’s a simple thing for you
If I’m standing at the crossroads
You know exactly what to do

From this moment on, I loved you
Somewhere in between I learned
I’m just reaching out to touch you
It’s the point of no return

I just realized
I just realized
And I just realized
Who am I, who am I, who am I telling you?

I just realized
I just realized
And I just realized
Who am I, who am I, who am I telling you?
