Ian Gillan – lead vocals
Ritchie Blackmore – guitar
Jon Lord – organ, keyboards
Roger Glover – bass
Ian Paice – drums

Written by Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord & Ian Paice. Produced by Deep Purple, recorded 1970. Released as the third track (10:17, later edited to about 4:15 for a single) on Deep Purple in Rock (Harvest Records, 3 June 1970). Though never issued as a commercial single, it became one of the band’s signature live staples.

“Child in Time” grew directly out of It’s a Beautiful Day‘s instrumental “Bombay Calling,” which Jon Lord was playing around with on keyboards one day; the band liked it and reworked it into something new, with Ritchie Blackmore building out guitar parts alongside Lord’s keyboard foundation. Ian Gillan wrote the lyrics separately, without having heard the It’s a Beautiful Day original, framing the song as a protest against the futility of the Cold War. The whole Mark II lineup shares the writing credit as a result. The song became a defining piece of the band’s live sets throughout the 1970s and has since been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, cited by musicians from Metallica’s Lars Ulrich to countless prog and metal acts as a major influence.

An instrumental showcase for David LaFlamme‘s violin, “Bombay Calling” is best known today as the acknowledged inspiration for Deep Purple’s “Child in Time.” Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan has said the organ riff was based directly on this track, and according to one account, keyboardist Jon Lord first played the song for the rest of the band after someone recalled it, leading them to slow it down and build their own song around the idea — a story also connected to Lord’s personal relationship with It’s a Beautiful Day’s vocalist, Pattie Santos, at the time. In an ironic twist, It’s a Beautiful Day later borrowed right back, reworking Deep Purple’s “Wring That Neck” into their own song “Don and Dewey” on their second album, Marrying Maiden (1970).

Despite missing the main singles chart, the song became a favorite among FM radio DJs, and a nearly ten-minute live version later appeared on the 1972 album It’s a Beautiful Day at Carnegie Hall. It’s also featured in the 1972 concert documentary Fillmore. The song had already been cut as a demo at San Francisco’s Avalon Ballroom on April 9, 1968, alongside “Bulgaria” and “Wasted Union Blues,” before all three were re-recorded for the full album.

The album was recorded by the San Francisco group under difficult circumstances — their manager, Matthew Katz, had kept them from performing live in San Francisco for about a year while the band awaited the chance to record, reportedly telling them they weren’t ready yet. Despite modest chart performance (the album reached No. 47 in the US), It’s a Beautiful Day is now regarded as a key document of the late-1960s San Francisco psychedelic scene, distinguished by David LaFlamme‘s prominent lead violin.

Described by one retrospective as having a late-night, smoochy feel with a wind-instrument break, the song was one of the more subdued ballads on the album’s second side, alongside tracks like “I Don’t Know Why I Still Love You.” A live version, recorded in 1981 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, was later released on the 1995 live album King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents Greg Lake in Concert. Manoeuvres turned out to be Lake’s final solo studio album.

“I Talk to the Wind” offers a gentle, folk-influenced counterpoint right after the assaultive jazz-rock of the album’s opener, “21st Century Schizoid Man,” and it’s the only song on the album that predates King Crimson itself — Ian McDonald had originally written it for the band’s predecessor group, Giles, Giles and Fripp, with the earlier lineup also including a since-departed Peter Giles and singer Judy Dyble (that earlier version later surfaced on the 1975 compilation The Young Person’s Guide to King Crimson). Retained and reworked for the debut album specifically to show the band’s softer side, it features Greg Lake and McDonald trading and overlapping lead vocals. This was the only studio album to feature this exact five-man lineup, as McDonald and Michael Giles both left the band shortly afterward.

Written by Ian McDonald & Peter Sinfield.
The title track began, according to Ian McDonald, as an entirely different kind of song — an earlier, more country-and-western-flavored attempt he and Peter Sinfield had worked on for a prior band, before King Crimson’s full treatment reshaped it into the album’s most elaborate, baroque arrangement. To achieve the album’s dense, orchestral textures, McDonald spent long hours overdubbing multiple layers of Mellotron along with his various woodwind and reed instruments. The band had initially worked with producer Tony Clarke (best known for his work with the Moody Blues), but after those early sessions didn’t pan out, King Crimson was given the chance to produce the record themselves.

It’s also notable as the only track on the album where Bowie plays 12-string guitar. The song became one of the most enduring recordings from the album; decades later, following Bowie’s death, it was the sole Pin Ups track performed at a BBC Proms tribute concert, sung by John Cale.

David Bowie – vocals
Pat Metheny – guitar, synthesizer
Lyle Mays – piano, keyboards, synthesizer
Steve Rodby – bass guitar
Paul Wertico – drums, percussion

Written by David Bowie, Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays. Produced by David Bowie & Pat Metheny, mixed by Bob Clearmountain, recorded 1984.

The song originated when director John Schlesinger invited Pat Metheny to score The Falcon and the Snowman, a spy drama starring Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton. Metheny wrote the theme — originally an instrumental titled “Chris” — while in Mexico City watching early filming, and Schlesinger later suggested bringing in David Bowie for a vocal version to play over the closing credits. Bowie took Metheny’s demo, added a drum machine part, kept the melody’s basic structure, and wrote an additional vocal line and lyric that Metheny has since called some of the most meaningful words he ever heard set to his music. Metheny flew with the core of his band to Bowie’s Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland, to record the single. Despite the jazz pedigree of the Pat Metheny Group, Bowie biographer Chris O’Leary has noted the track is “hardly a jazz piece,” with Metheny playing a simple rhythm guitar throughout rather than any solos.

Written by Marvin Gaye, William “Mickey” Stevenson & Ivy Jo Hunter (originally a 1964 Martha and the Vandellas recording). Produced by David Bowie, Alan Winstanley & Clive Langer, with additional production by Nile Rodgers, Mick Jagger, Steve Thompson & Michael Barbiero, recorded in one session on 29 June 1985 at Westside Studios, London.

The track came together while David Bowie was at Westside Studios recording his contributions to the Absolute Beginners soundtrack, using many of the same session musicians. An early Live Aid plan had called for a transatlantic duet, with Bowie performing from Wembley Stadium and Mick Jagger from JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, but the satellite delay made that unworkable, so Jagger instead flew to London to record the song in person with Bowie — reportedly completing the whole track in just two takes over about four hours. Bassist John Regan later recalled watching Jagger dance around the studio with full performance energy even during the session. Jagger ultimately performed the Live Aid set with Tina Turner instead, while this recording became a Grammy-nominated, chart-topping charity single.

“Let’s Dance” was written at Bowie’s home in Lausanne, Switzerland, originally conceived as a sparse folk-rock piece he played for Nile Rodgers on a 12-string guitar strung with only six strings. Rodgers, initially skeptical it could work as dance music, reworked the arrangement into a funkier, more commercial direction — shifting the key, inverting the chords, and adding upstrokes with help from engineer Bob Clearmountain. The track introduced then largely unknown Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan to a mainstream audience; the two reportedly had a falling-out shortly after recording, centered on a personal dispute, and Vaughan went uncredited in the original liner notes despite his guitar work being central to the song.

Artists

Musicians featured in this piece are:

David Bowie – vocals, synthesizer
Freddie Mercury – vocals, piano, Hammond organ
Brian May – guitar
John Deacon – bass guitar
Roger Taylor – drums, vocals
David Richards – piano

Written by David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor, John Deacon & Brian May. Produced by Queen & David Bowie, recorded July and September 1981 at Mountain Studios, Montreux, Switzerland (Queen’s own studio), with final mixing at Power Station, New York.

The song grew out of pure chance: David Bowie had scheduled studio time at Mountain Studios to record “Cat People (Putting Out Fire)” with Giorgio Moroder while Queen was working next door on what became Hot Space. Bowie came in initially just to add backing vocals to a different Queen track, “Cool Cat” (later scrapped), but the session turned into a loose jam that evolved out of an unfinished Queen song called “Feel Like,” written by Roger Taylor. Accounts differ on authorship of specific elements — bassist John Deacon is widely credited with the song’s instantly recognizable bass riff, though Bowie has said it already existed before he got involved, and Freddie Mercury has been credited as the primary songwriter by his own bandmates, with Bowie largely shaping the final lyrics. The mixing process was famously contentious, with Mercury and Bowie clashing fiercely over the final version. Decades later, the song’s bassline became the uncredited basis for Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby,” resulting in an out-of-court settlement that gave Queen and Bowie both compensation and a songwriting credit.

Produced by David Bowie & Tony Visconti, recorded at The Power Station, New York, February 1980, and Good Earth Studios, London, April 1980. Released as the lead single from Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) on 1 August 1980 (RCA Records), becoming Bowie’s second UK No. 1 single; the album followed on 12 September 1980, also hitting No. 1 in the UK.

“Ashes to Ashes” revisits the character of Major Tom from Bowie’s earlier “Space Oddity,” placing him in a bleaker, drug-addled light years later. Its signature choir-like, synthetic texture came from Chuck Hammer, a guitarist Bowie hired after hearing him play with Lou Reed in London the year before, who layered four multi-tracked guitar synthesizers playing opposing chord inversions. The sessions happened to run alongside Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band recording The River in an adjacent studio, which is how pianist Roy Bittan ended up contributing. At the time, its accompanying video — co-directed by Bowie and David Mallet — was the most expensive music video ever made.

Artists

Musicians featured in this piece are:

Written by David Bowie. Produced by David Bowie & Tony Visconti, recorded at The Power Station, New York, February 1980, and Good Earth Studios, London, April 1980.

According to co-producer Tony Visconti, “Fashion” was the last song completed during the Scary Monsters sessions, with its bassline and some of the melody drawing on Bowie’s earlier hit “Golden Years.” The track evolved out of a reggae-flavored synth part from keyboardist Andy Clark, and King Crimson’s Robert Fripp — already a key contributor to Bowie’s 1977 album “Heroes” — returned to add a series of harsh, mechanical guitar lines over the song’s funk-reggae groove. Lyrically, Bowie later said he was less interested in making a simple statement about fashion trends and more in capturing a kind of gritted-teeth determination mixed with self-doubt; biographer David Buckley has read it as a gentle jab at the posturing of the New Romantic movement. Fripp’s contributions to this album, along with “Heroes,” later became the subject of a royalty dispute with the Bowie estate over his “Featured Player” status.

Written by David Bowie. Produced and mixed by Tony Visconti, recorded 11–18 August 1974 at Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia.

The title track announced David Bowie‘s turn from glam rock into what he called “plastic soul.” He assembled a band of top New York session players — Carlos Alomar, Willie Weeks, Andy Newmark, and David Sanborn — alongside conga player Larry Washington, who’d been meant to bring his whole group but ended up the only one available. The backing vocal arrangement was largely shaped by then-unknown singer Luther Vandross, who was brought in as a backing vocalist and suggested the song’s call-and-response refrain; he went on to co-write the album’s later track “Fascination” with Bowie, built from one of his own unfinished songs, “Funky Music.” The track was recorded live with the full band, with only Sanborn’s saxophone overdubbed afterward.

Written by David Bowie. Produced by David Bowie, recorded December 1973–January 1974 at Olympic Studios, London.

“Rebel Rebel” was originally written for a planned Ziggy Stardust musical that never came to fruition, and is widely regarded as David Bowie‘s farewell to the glam rock movement he had helped build. Guitarist Alan Parker helped Bowie work out the song’s signature riff, which Bowie himself has said was owed in part to time Keith Richards spent around him during the sessions. It was Bowie’s first hit since 1969 not to feature guitarist Mick Ronson, since Bowie played guitar on almost all of Diamond Dogs himself. A different, shorter US single mix, credited simply to “Bowie” and featuring congas from Geoff MacCormack, briefly replaced the UK version before being withdrawn; it’s cited as Bowie’s most-covered song.

Bowie had long admired the Rolling Stones, and their influence runs through several of Aladdin Sane’s more rock-driven tracks, this cover among them. Where the Stones themselves had been pressured into softening the lyric to “let’s spend some time together” for their 1967 Ed Sullivan Show appearance, Bowie — recording his glam rock version some six years later — kept the original, more suggestive title and lyric intact, fitting the album’s broader preoccupation with sex and drugs. The track closes out the sequence of singles drawn from the album, following “The Jean Genie,” “Drive-In Saturday,” and “Time.”

The title track tells the story of Ziggy Stardust, the bisexual alien rock star persona Bowie created as a messenger for extraterrestrial beings, and the song is sung from the perspective of someone recalling the character after his downfall. A demo version, recorded before the final Spiders from Mars take, later surfaced as a bonus track on the 1990 Rykodisc reissue and again on the 2002 30th-anniversary edition. David Bowie performed the song regularly across the Ziggy Stardust Tour, the 1978 Stage tour, and again during his tours in the 2000s, and it remains one of the most enduring songs of his career, later covered live by artists from Bauhaus to Nirvana.

Ziggy played for time
Jiving us that we were Voodoo
The kids was just crass
He was the naz
With God-given ass
He took it all too far
But boy, could he play guitar

Making love with his ego
Ziggy sucked up into his mind (ah)
Like a leper messiah
When the kids had killed a man
I had to break up the band

Written by David Bowie. Produced by David Bowie & Ken Scott, recorded at Trident Studios, London, 4 February 1972.

“Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide” closes out the Ziggy Stardust album by detailing the character’s final collapse as a burnt-out rock star, and it correspondingly served as the closing number of the Ziggy Stardust live show. David Bowie cited James Brown’s “Try Me” and “Lost Someone” as loose inspirations. At the final Ziggy Stardust concert, held on 3 July 1973 at the Hammersmith Odeon, Bowie preceded the song by announcing “This is the last show we’ll ever do” — a line later understood as the retirement of the Ziggy persona, caught on film in D.A. Pennebaker’s Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture.

Time takes a cigarette, puts it in your mouth
You pull on your finger, then another finger, then your cigarette
The wall-to-wall is calling, it lingers, then you forget
Oh oh, oh, oh, you’re a rock ‘n’ roll suicide

You’re too old to lose it, too young to choose it
And the clock waits so patiently on your song
You walk past a cafe but you don’t eat when you’ve lived too long
Oh, no, no, no, you’re a rock ‘n’ roll suicide

Chev brakes are snarling as you stumble across the road
But the day breaks instead so you hurry home
Don’t let the sun blast your shadow
Don’t let the milk float ride your mind
You’re so natural – religiously unkind

Oh no, love! You’re not alone
You’re watching yourself but you’re too unfair
You got your head all tangled up
But if I could only make you care
Oh no, love! You’re not alone
No matter what or who you’ve been
No matter when or where you’ve seen
All the knives seem to lacerate your brain
I’ve had my share, I’ll help you with the pain
You’re not alone!

Just turn on with me and you’re not alone
Let’s turn on and be not alone (wonderful)
Gimme your hands ’cause you’re wonderful (wonderful)
Gimme your hands ’cause you’re wonderful (wonderful)
Oh, gimme your hands

Bowie described the song as a “smorgasbord of imagined Americana” built loosely around an Iggy Pop-type persona, with the title doubling as a pun on French writer Jean Genet.
Written by David Bowie. Produced by Tony Visconti.

The track is built around a circular, repeating electric guitar riff from Mick Ronson, with David Bowie‘s acoustic guitar laid underneath. Tony Visconti has said his melodic bassline was worked out alongside Ronson’s riff against Bowie’s simple chord structure, and that the three of them, along with Woody Woodmansey, functioned almost like a self-contained band during the sessions, having just met Ronson during mixing for the earlier Space Oddity album. The record marked the first appearance of future Spiders from Mars members Ronson and Woodmansey on a Bowie album, and despite producing no hit singles at the time, it’s widely regarded as the true start of Bowie’s classic creative period.

Written by David Bowie. Produced by Gus Dudgeon (produced separately from the rest of the album, which was produced by Tony Visconti), recorded at Trident Studios, London, June 1969.

Notably, Tony Visconti, who produced the rest of the album, initially refused to work on “Space Oddity” itself, dismissing it as a novelty cash-in on the upcoming Apollo 11 moon landing. He handed production duties to engineer Gus Dudgeon, who mapped out the arrangement in painstaking detail with Paul Buckmaster, despite being unable to read music. Mercury rushed the single out just five days before the actual Apollo 11 launch, and it became Bowie’s first UK hit. Bowie later credited Marc Bolan with the idea to add the distinctive Stylophone part. Visconti would go on to say he regretted turning the song down once he heard Dudgeon’s finished production.

“Trans-Island Skyway” opens Kamakiriad’s loosely conceptual road-trip narrative, introducing the story’s protagonist as he sets out in his futuristic, steam-powered car, the Kamakiri. Reviewers describe Donald Fagen singing in an upbeat, high register occasionally reminiscent of late-period Ray Charles, with horns providing background support and Chris Parker‘s drums driving the track’s tight, funky groove. The album marked Fagen’s first full-length reunion with Walter Becker since Steely Dan’s 1980 album Gaucho, and its success helped spark Steely Dan’s first tour in almost two decades.

Artists

Musicians featured in this piece are:

Donald Fagen – lead vocals, keyboards, horn and rhythm arrangements
Walter Becker – bass guitar

Written by Donald Fagen. Produced by Walter Becker. Released as the third track (5:06/5:07) on Kamakiriad (Reprise Records, May 21, 1993).

“Springtime” is described by reviewers as one of the funkier, horn-driven tracks on Kamakiriad, with a Classic Rock Review write-up singling out Walter Becker‘s funky bass line and the song’s blend of strong backing horns and evocative keyboards. It fits into the album’s larger concept — an eight-song cycle following a narrator’s road trip in a futuristic, eco-friendly car called the Kamakiri — with promotional copy for the album’s audiophile reissues describing the track’s theme as revisiting old romances through virtual reality. Kamakiriad marked the first full collaboration between Fagen and Becker since Steely Dan’s 1980 album Gaucho, and helped spark both their reunion as a duo and Steely Dan’s first tour in nearly 20 years.

Here at Laughing Pines where the party never ends
There’s a spicy new attraction on the Funway
You can scan yourself for traces of old heartaches
The details of desire shimmering, shimmering
