Written by Don Henley & Glenn Frey. Produced by Eagles & Bill Szymczyk, engineered by Bill Szymczyk, recorded late 1974–early 1975. Released as the title track and lead single on One of These Nights (Asylum Records, May 19, 1975). Reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the band’s second chart-topper after “Best of My Love.”
“One of These Nights” arrived soon after guitarist Don Felder joined the band, and Don Henley has said they deliberately wanted to move away from the ballad-heavy sound of earlier singles. Henley described the writing process simply: he started playing a descending minor progression on piano, and Glenn Frey came over singing the title phrase back at him. Bill Szymczyk, newly on board as producer after Glyn Johns departed over creative differences, helped push the album and its title track toward a bigger, more mainstream rock sound. Frey later named it his favorite Eagles recording, calling it the band’s “quantum leap” moment as songwriters.
