Produced by Simon Rogers, with a mix by Nick Rogers (single mix). From Deep (Beggars Banquet, 19 December 1989), released as its second single in March 1990; the album version runs about 5:24 and the radio edit is 4:13.

The song’s signature “violin” line is actually a keyboard sample: producer Simon Rogers brought in a real viola player, but it didn’t sound as good, so the sampled part stayed. It spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the US Modern Rock chart and reached No. 55 on the Hot 100, making it Peter Murphy’s only Hot 100 entry, and sold over 250,000 copies in its first three weeks. Murphy described it as being about two people in love, though not strictly romantically.

On and on it goes
Calling like a distant wind
Through the zero hour we’ll walk
We’ll cut the thick and break the thin
No sound to break no moment clear
When all the doubts are crystal clear
Crashing hard into the secret wind

You know the way, it twists and turns
Changing colour, spinning yarns
You know the way, it leaves you dry
It cuts you up and takes you high
You know the way, it’s painted gold
Is it honey? Is it cold?
You know the way, it throws about
It takes you in and spits you out

The album version runs about 3:48, with a longer, drum-driven “Version Two” at about 5:20.

A mournful love song built around acoustic guitar and Paul Statham’s plaintive keyboards, which AllMusic called one of Peter Murphy’s strongest lyrics and performances. The single and video use a remixed version with drums, bass, and electric guitars added toward the end, giving it a more pop-oriented feel. In concert, Murphy would sometimes lead the song into a medley with Bauhaus’s “Bela Lugosi’s Dead.” It was a modern rock hit alongside “Cuts You Up” and “The Line Between the Devil’s Teeth.”

An extended reworking of “Subway” from Peter Murphy’s 1995 album Cascade, rebuilt here with Turkish instruments and violin by Hugh Marsh. AllMusic noted that the original quoted Petula Clark’s “Don’t Sleep in the Subway” in its vocal, over Paul Statham’s synth strings. A reviewer called the Dust version a successful dusting-off of the 1995 song, one of two album-closing remakes alongside “My Last Two Weeks.”

Bauhaus’s first studio album in 25 years and their final one, with the opening track chosen to kick things off with the band’s classic goth-rock sound. The album was made largely in first takes, and Peter Murphy has said it felt like the right time for the band to end. Critics at the time saw it as a summary of their career, with reviewers noting the influence of the members’ later work with Love and Rockets and Murphy’s solo career.
