Written by Bob Dylan. Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York City, October 16, 1992, for The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration. Released on the Bob Dylan: The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration live album (Columbia Records, 1993) and accompanying home video.

Originally from 1964’s Another Side of Bob Dylan, “My Back Pages” served as the show’s all-star centerpiece, bringing together six lead vocalists across its verses: Roger McGuinn (whose own 1967 Byrds cover was the version most audiences knew), Tom Petty, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan himself, and finally George Harrison closing it out. It led directly into the full-cast finale of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” This performance is widely regarded as one of the emotional high points of the entire concert, and one of George Harrison’s final major public appearances.

Bob Dylan, Roger McGuinn, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, George Harrison – My Back Pages Lyrics

[Verse 1: Roger McGuinn]
Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rolling high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
“We’ll meet on edges, soon,” said I
Proud ’neath heated brow

[Refrain: All]
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

[Verse 2: Tom Petty]
Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
“Rip down all hate,” I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull, I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow

[Refrain: All]
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

[Verse 3: Neil Young]
Girls’ faces formed the forward path
From phony jealousy
To memorizing politics
Of ancient history
Flung down by corpse evangelists
Un-thought of, though, somehow

[Refrain: All]
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

[Guitar Solo: Eric Clapton]

[Verse 3: Eric Clapton]
A self-ordained professor’s tongue
Too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty
Is just equality in school
“Equality,” I spoke the word
As if a wedding vow

[Refrain: All]
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

[Verse 4: Bob Dylan]
In a soldier’s stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I’d become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My existence led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow

[Refrain: All]
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

[Verse 5: George Harrison]
Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking
I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow

[Refrain: All]
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

[Guitar Solo: Neil Young]

[Refrain: All]
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now
