Written by Deadric Malone (a pseudonym of Houston label owner Don Robey). Recorded at Stax Studios, Memphis, 1966-67, with Booker T. & the M.G.’s as the backing band. Released as track 10 on Born Under a Bad Sign (Stax Records, August 1967); reissued in 1969 as the B-side of the Atlantic single “The Hunter.”

A slow, minor-key blues that AllMusic singles out as one of the album’s most distinctive cuts, “As the Years Go Passing By” gives Albert King room for deep vocals and stinging, bent-note guitar solos, while Booker T. & the M.G.’s provide a spare, sturdy groove. The album itself was compiled from a run of Stax singles recorded across five sessions between March 1966 and June 1967, and is now regarded as one of the greatest blues albums ever made, with its guitar work influencing players like Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Albert King – As The Years Go Passing By Lyrics

There is nothing I can do, if you leave me, with a cry
There is nothing I can do, if you leave me, with a cry
You know my love will follow you as the years go passing by

I gave you all of my own, that’s one thing you can’t deny
Yeah, I gave you all my own, that’s one thing you can’t deny
You know my love will follow you as the years go passing by

I’m gonna leave it up to you, so long, so long, good bye
I’m gonna leave it up to you, so long, so long, good bye
You know my love will follow you, as the years go passing by
