Greg Lake – co-lead vocals, bass guitar
Ian McDonald – co-lead vocals, reed organ, flute, clarinet, piano
Robert Fripp – electric guitar
Michael Giles – drums, percussion

Written by Ian McDonald & Peter Sinfield. Produced by King Crimson, engineered by Robin Thompson, assistant engineer Tony Page, recorded 29 July 1969 at Wessex Sound Studios, London.

“I Talk to the Wind” offers a gentle, folk-influenced counterpoint right after the assaultive jazz-rock of the album’s opener, “21st Century Schizoid Man,” and it’s the only song on the album that predates King Crimson itself — Ian McDonald had originally written it for the band’s predecessor group, Giles, Giles and Fripp, with the earlier lineup also including a since-departed Peter Giles and singer Judy Dyble (that earlier version later surfaced on the 1975 compilation The Young Person’s Guide to King Crimson). Retained and reworked for the debut album specifically to show the band’s softer side, it features Greg Lake and McDonald trading and overlapping lead vocals. This was the only studio album to feature this exact five-man lineup, as McDonald and Michael Giles both left the band shortly afterward.

King Crimson – I Talk To The Wind Lyrics

Said the straight man to the late man
“Where have you been?”
I’ve been here and I’ve been there
And I’ve been in between

I talk to the wind
My words are all carried away
I talk to the wind
The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear

I’m on the outside looking inside
What do I see
Much confusion, disillusion
All around me

I talk to the wind
My words are all carried away
I talk to the wind
The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear

You don’t possess me
Don’t impress me
Just upset my mind
Can’t instruct me or conduct me
Just use up my time

I talk to the wind
My words are all carried away
I talk to the wind
The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear

I talk to the wind
My words are all carried away
I talk to the wind
The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear

The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear
[repeat]
