Written by Eddie Brigati & Felix Cavaliere. Produced by Arif Mardin, recorded 1994. Released as the second track on Tonin’ (Atlantic Records, January 1995).
A cover of The Young Rascals’ 1967 hit, this recording brought that song’s original lead singer and co-writer, Felix Cavaliere, back to reprise the vocal himself, with The Manhattan Transfer effectively serving as his backing harmony group. It fit the concept of Tonin’ as a whole — an album built around reuniting the group with the original artists behind classic 1960s pop and R&B songs, rather than reinterpreting them independently.
The Manhattan Transfer – Groovin’ Lyrics
Just groovin’
Groovin’ woh oh oh
Yeah e yeah e yeah groovin’
Woh oh oh
Groovin’
On a Sunday afternoon
Really
Couldn’t get away to soon
I can’t imagine anything that’s better
The world is ours whenever we’re together
There ain’t a place I’d like to be instead
Yeah, just groovin’
Just groovin’
Groovin’ woh oh oh
Groovin’
Down a crowded avenue
Doing
Anything we like to do (anything, anything)
There’s always lots of things that we can see
We can be anyone we’d like to be
And all those happy people we could meet
Yeah
Groovin’
On a Sunday afternoon
Really
Couldn’t get away too soon
No no no no
Ah…
We’ll keep on spending sunny days this way
We’re gonna talk and laugh the time away
I feel it coming closer day by day
Life would be ecstasy you and me endlessly
Groovin’
On a Sunday afternoon
Really
Couldn’t get away to soon
Groovin’
On a Sunday afternoon
Really (really now)
Couldn’t get away
Yeah
Couldn’t get away now
No, no, no groovin’
Just groovin’ oh, oh yeah
Just groovin’
(Really)
Just groovin’ yeah, yeah, yeah
(Couldn’t get away too soon, no, no, no)
Just groovin’
