Written by Roy Hawkins & Rick Darnell. Released on Tonin’ (Atlantic Records, 1995), an album built entirely around guest collaborations with veteran R&B and rock ‘n’ roll artists.

Originally a Roy Hawkins blues from 1951, “The Thrill Is Gone” became B.B. King’s signature song after his own 1969 recording turned it into a major hit. Tonin’ was conceived as a tribute record, pairing The Manhattan Transfer with a roster of legendary guests on covers tied to each artist — here bringing King back to his own best-known song alongside R&B singer Ruth Brown, a pairing that let the group’s vocal harmonies frame two generations of blues and R&B legends together.

The Manhattan Transfer – The Thrill Is Gone Lyrics

The thrill is gone
The thrill is gone away
The thrill is gone
The thrill is gone away
You know you done me wrong baby
And you’ll be sorry some day

The thrill is gone
It’s gone away from me
The thrill is gone baby
The thrill is gone away from me
Although I’ll still live on
But so lonely I’ll be

The thrill is gone
It’s gone away for good
The thrill is gone
It’s gone away for good
Someday I’ll be over it all
Just like a good woman should

Y’know I’m free free now baby
I’m free from your spell
Y’know I’m free free now baby
I’m free from your spell
And now that it’s all over
All I can do is wish you well
