Music by Philip Glass, lyrics by Laurie Anderson. Produced by Kurt Munkacsi, recorded at The Living Room, New York, and The Complex, Los Angeles, 1985–86. Released as the closing track on Songs from Liquid Days (CBS Records, 1986).
“Forgetting” closes the album with the contribution from Laurie Anderson, the last of the four songwriters Glass brought in for the project. It’s also the second of two tracks (alongside “Freezing”) to feature the Kronos Quartet‘s strings, and pairs Linda Ronstadt once again with the vocal harmonies of The Roches.
Philip Glass – Forgetting Lyrics
[Verse 1: Linda Ronstadat]
A man wakes up
To the sound of rain
From a dream about his lovers
Who pass through his room
[Chorus: The Roches]
They brush lightly by, these lovers
They pass, never touching
These passing lovers move through his room
Ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah ah, ah ah, ah ah, ah ah
Ah ah, ah ah, ah ah, ah ah
[Verse 2: Linda Ronstadt]
The man is awake now
He can’t get to sleep again
So he repeats these words
Over and over again
[Chorus: The Roches, Linda Ronstadt]
Bravery, kindness, clarity
Honesty, compassion, generosity
Bravery, honesty, dignity
Clarity, kindness, compassion
(Ah) Bravery, kindness, clarity
(Ah) Honesty, compassion, generosity
(Ah-ooh) Bravery, honesty, dignity
(Ooh) Clarity, kindness, compassion
(Ooh) Bravery, kindness, clarity
Honesty, compassion, generosity
Bravery, honesty, dignity
Clarity, kindness, compassion
(Ah) Bravery, kindness, clarity
(Ah) Honesty, compassion, generosity
(Ah-ooh) Bravery, honesty, dignity
(Ooh) Clarity, kindness, compassion
